MPEDA has the mandate to encourage the sector of marine products with special regard to the country's exports. This organization is expected to take all measures to create and increase the funds necessary to promote the export of' all types of fishery products known commercially as shrimp, prawn, lobster, crab, fish, shellfish, other aquatic animals or crops or parts thereof and any other products which the authority may declare to be marine by notification in the Indian Gazette.
MPEDA is India's nodal organisation to realize its full export potential as a nodal agency for the seafood industry's holistic development.
MPEDA has set up four quality control laboratories in Kochi (Kerala), Bhimavaram, Nellore (Andhra Pradesh) and Bhubaneswar (Odisha). MPEDA QC Laboratories (Kochi, Nellore and Bhimavaram) are accredited as a member of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) in accordance with the ISO / IEC 17025: 2005 standard. The labs are also ISO 9001:2008 accredited.
The National Residue Control Plan (NRCP) for aquaculture goods is being implemented by the labs at Kochi, Nellore and Bhimavaram in compliance with Directive 96/23/EC.
