The National Virology Institute is one of the Indian Medical Research Council's (ICMR) main institutes. It was founded as a Virus Research Center (VRC) under the auspices of the ICMR and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) in Pune, Maharashtra State in 1952. It was a result of the RF's worldwide research program on Arthropod Borne viruses. Since the arbovirus studies and their arthropod vectors involve most of the fundamental concepts and methods of general virology, entomology and zoology, these viruses were also regarded an optimal group for intensive practice and virology study in our nation. In 1967, the RF withdrew its assistance and the Institute has since been fully financed by the ICMR.
By organizing fresh study fields such as Cell Repository, Electron Microscopy, Rickettsioses, Hepatitis, Influenza and associated viruses, Clinical Virology, Biochemistry, Virus Registry, and Biostatistics, the center's study operations were created more meaningful and self-reliant. A Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) composed of eminent researchers coordinates the Institute's study operations.
