Under the act APGM 1937, 22 Regional testing laboratories have been established to formulate standards and conduct physical and chemical analysis of agricultural and allied commodities. One of these labs is situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra which specifically carries out chemical testing of essential oils, edible oils and fats. Mumbai lab has state of the art facilities and modern technology which makes it adept for setting standards for this particular agricultural produce. Some oils which are subjected to testing are mustard oil, groundnut oil, sesame oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, soyabean oil, ricebran oil and castor oil. These oils are tested for their moisture content, saponification value, iodine value, acid value, colour value and many other factors. These laboratories are set up by directorate of market and inspection which comes under the aegis of ministry of agriculture and farmer’s welfare, therefore has great responsibility to ensure quality of agricultural produce.
