About Regional Agmark Laboratory (RAL), Tamil Nadu
Under the act APGM 1937, 22 Regional testing laboratories have been established to formulate standards and conduct physical and chemical analysis of agricultural and allied commodities. One of these labs is situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu which specifically carries out testing of different sorts of edible oil by the name of Chennai lab has state of the art facilities and modern technology which makes it adept for setting standards for this particular agricultural produce. Some examples of the various oil and fats which are tested include mustard oil, groundnut oil, sesame oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, soyabean oil, ricebran oil and castor oil. These oils are tested for their moisture content, saponification value, iodine value, acid value, colour value and many other factors. These laboratories are set up by directorate of market and inspection which comes under the aegis of ministry of agriculture and farmer’s welfare, therefore they have a great responsibility to ensure quality of agricultural produce.
